Children-in-Between (CiB) Programme
A programme for divorcing or divorced parents and their children who are caught in-between.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
CiB is a programme for separating / divorcing families, where parents are experiencing co-parenting conflict and children may feel caught in-between. It is offered as separate programmes for parents (ie. CiB (Parents)), and for children aged 6 to 15 years (ie. CiB (Children)).
CiB (Parents) helps reduce the negative impact of co-parent conflict on your children, and CiB (Children) equips children with skills to cope with their parents’ divorce and manage tough situations at home.
CiB is free for Singaporeans, Singapore Permanent Residents, and persons with a Singapore nexus (ie. persons with a relative who is a Singaporean / Singapore Permanent Resident). More information on CiB may be found here.
CiB (Parents) is offered as an e-learning on the Family Assist (FA) Portal. The e-learning is in English and takes approximately 2.5 hours to complete.
- If you are ordered by the Court to attend CiB (Parents), you need to complete both the e-learning and a consultation session at a Strengthening Families Programme (FAM) centre. A FAM counsellor will contact you to arrange for a consultation session. Prior to attending this session, you must complete the CiB (Parents) e-learning online. Upon completion, you may download the CiB (Parents) e-learning completion certificate for reference. You are also encouraged to bring your downloaded responses for consultation with the FAM counsellor. The completion certificate is valid for 2 years. If you had completed the e-learning prior to receiving the court order for CiB (Parents) and the certificate is still valid, you will not need to do the e-learning again and can proceed directly for the consultation.
- If you wish to complete CiB (Parents) voluntarily, you may do so independently online. You are not required to attend a consultation with a FAM counsellor, but you may contact a FAM centre should you have further queries.
CiB (Children) is conducted as a small group programme consisting of 3 in-person sessions of 2 hours each. Contact a FAM centre to find out how to enrol your children for the programme.
If you and the other parent are facing conflict in co-parenting, CiB (Parents) can help reduce the negative impact of divorce on your children. The following topics will be covered:
CiB (Parents)
- Practical Co-Parenting Skills
- Ways to reduce parental conflict
- Understanding the needs of their children in a divorce situation
CiB (Children)
- Positive ways to cope with parents’ divorce
- Exploring feelings and fears, myths and truths
- Skills to share feelings
Research by the Center for Divorce Education (CDE), developers of the Children in Between programme, shows that parents who attend CiB experience reduced parental conflict, improved co-parenting skills, and create healthier emotional environments for their children. For more details on the research behind CiB, you can visit the CDE website here.
Early findings indicate that after completing CiB (Children), participating local children in Singapore showed improvements in emotional and behavioural difficulties.
You may register for a Singpass account at https://www.singpass.gov.sg/home/ui/register/instructions. If you are ineligible for Singpass, you may approach a FAM centre to register for the programme.
If you need to attend CiB (Parents) in another language, or are unable to complete the CiB (Parents) e-learning due to visual impairment, technological difficulties and/or other circumstances, you may approach a FAM centre for assistance.
